After two years of painstaking restoration at Ship to Shore in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, our beloved 1946 Morgan Giles rowing gig Waterwitch was back where she belongs — on the water.
From the moment Waterwitch’s restoration began, it was Anne Baker’s intention to one day see her enter the Great River Race. While Anne sadly passed away before she could see that dream fulfilled, the crew who took to the water last September did so in her memory.
Six officers and post holders – Angela B, Jo G, Steph L, Mary L, Ali L, and Bethany D. – took on the challenge, training throughout the summer at Rose Cottage to prepare for the 20th of September start. Getting Waterwitch to the race was itself no small feat, and huge thanks go to Richard, Grahame, and Dave for making the logistics work!
Race day brought chopping conditions – with waves breaking over her sides – but the crew pushed on against the wind and tide to complete the course. The cheers of supporters along the route carried them to the finish!
